To enhance students’ interest in learning English, our English Department has devoted a lot of effort to implement English drama and musical education over the last few years. Our Secondary 2 students have Drama lessons every week. Through the use of voice, role play, puppetry and short plays, students’ confidence and overall language ability has been boosted.
Our annual English Musical performance is popular among all students. Students actively participate in auditions and are cast in different roles. Some alumni, who have participated in our musicals in the past, return to school to assist with the musical production. The impact of these performances on our students’ enjoyment of language learning has been profound, and some alumni have even gone on to join English musical courses at the Hong Kong Performing Arts Academy after graduation. The musical is a highlight of our school year, providing satisfaction and positive experiences for all those involved.
As well as performing in our school hall, our musical team has also performed in Sha Tin Town Hall. Our students have performed in classics such as High School Musical, Grease, Big The Musical, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr. and Disney’s Aladdin Jr. Initially, our shows were exclusively for students and teachers, but have since been broadened for the enjoyment of teachers from other schools, parents and the wider community.
Between 2018-2019, our school worked on a joint performance with two other CUHKFAA schools in Sha Tin, namely Thomas Cheung Kindergarten and Thomas Cheung School. The show was titled Musical Delights 2019, and the play our school performed was ‘Seussical Jr’.
English Drama Education plays a vital role in our English learning curriculum. During drama lessons and musical performances, our students not only enhance their ability and confidence in using English, but improve their problem-solving skills and collaboration skills, too. From a fear of speaking English publically, to performing English scripts confidently on the stage, the outstanding progress of our students is displayed to the delight of our many proud parents.
